National Insurance and tax

Edited

Why do I need to add my National Insurance number?

We're required to collect this information under HMRC's reporting rules for digital platforms. These rules require digital platforms like PMT Education to collect and, where required, report certain information about tutors and their earnings.

How do I add my National Insurance number?

Log in to your tutor dashboard and go to Payments → Payment information. Enter your National Insurance number and save your changes.

What if I’m a business or don’t have a National Insurance number?

Please contact us. We will need to collect alternative information instead.

What happens if I don't add my National Insurance number?

From August, tutors who haven't provided their National Insurance number won't be able to book new lesson until it has been added.

Will my earnings be taxed?

Providing your National Insurance number does not necessarily mean you will need to pay tax.

Whether you need to pay tax will depend on your individual circumstances, including your total income and any applicable tax-free allowances.

All of our tutors work on a self-employed basis and are not employees of PMT Education. Therefore, it’s up to you as an individual to register as self-employed and declare your earnings to HMRC.

You can find more information about self-employment and paying tax on the government's website. You may also find our blog article helpful: Tutoring and taxes: A guide for self-employed UK tutors.
