Do I need an enhanced DBS check to tutor?

What is an enhanced DBS check?

A DBS check is performed by the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS), a government agency that assists employers with making safer recruitment decisions. An enhanced DBS check shows the full extent of an individual’s criminal record and includes everything from cautions and warnings, to spent and unspent convictions. It’s very much a standard process for anyone working with children or vulnerable adults.

Do I need DBS to tutor for PMT?

Yes, DBS checks are becoming compulsory for all existing and new tutors on our platform.

All tutors on our platform must have an enhanced DBS certificate issued within the last 2 years or be registered for the DBS Update Service by 1st December 2024.

Though it's not currently a legal requirement, having an enhanced DBS check is a robust safeguarding standard for private tutors. This policy change will ensure the highest standards of safeguarding practice have been met. We hope you agree that this is a necessary step to protect students and maintain trust in our platform.

When we have a record of your DBS, we’ll add a badge to your public profile, which will be visible to parents, guardians, and students.

I have a DBS, how do I get a badge on my profile?

If your DBS check is an enhanced DBS check issued within the last 2 years, or you’re on the update service, you’re eligible for a DBS badge on your profile. Just upload a copy of your DBS when you’re submitting your application and we’ll do the rest. We’ll only be able to show a DBS badge if you have an enhanced DBS check, not a standard check.
